Dymocks Booksellers is an Australian-founded privately owned bookstore chain, that also specialise in CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, e-books and related merchandising. It currently has 65 stores locally and has had several stores in New Zealand and Hong Kong.

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee says"- No break room - No social culture in office, whatsoever - No office activities, fruit bowl, events - Your 'team building' day will be a lecture in the boardroom. Which you will be forced to answer questions about - Once a year the "important people" go on conference and leave behind about 20% of the office. Even if you have been dealing with franchise owners more than some of the other employees who have scored a ticket to conference, you might not be deemed worthy enough to go. - When 80% of the office goes away on conference you will be blessed with the privilege of seeing all their social activities (including fancy fun dinners, games, chilling by the hotel pools) on the company intranet so you don't have to feel like you're missing out. On the plus side though you get to go to work everyday without any managers so it's peaceful. - If you were looking for pay increases every year (or every two years - or in some cases I heard every three years) you won't get them. - Very conservative family owned company. Change/innovative ideas aren't a thing here. But honestly everyone's experience is different. You might get an amazing manager or you might have a job you love. You might not care about office culture or activities or job progression - and if that's the case and you're looking for a role in the books industry then this might just be the place for you. There are some superstar people there."

Produktmanager Indoorcycling / Gruppenfitness says"Dymocks stores are individually franchised, so there is essentially no HR department that I know of for the franchises I worked for, and very little structure to keep you safe as a loyal employee. Our store was incredibly busy and were keeping well over budgets, doing fantastic for a book store, yet they were constantly cutting staff hours much to the chagrin of the store managers, when we needed more people to run things as smooth as possible. There were no part-time contracts available at these franchises, every non-managing staff member was casual regardless of hours worked or time spent with the company. When I got the job I was told I would be casual for a probation period of three months, after that if I continued to work there I would be put on a part-time contract, but this did not happen. Though having mostly casual staff is not inherently bad, this does not protect long-term staff members from potentially unfair dismissal. Dymocks can be an amazing place to work and is incredibly fulfilling so the cons can be worth it! However due to the lack of HR department with franchise stores definitely consider the pros and cons before you decide if it's the right kind of workplace for you."
